I thought I would post two more pictures of items that I am planning on putting in the baby's room. The first is a painted and hand-carved piece that she did and the second is the lid to a Humpty Dumpty box. If any of her painting friends are reading, I'm sure you'll remember this box! :) Unfortunately, all I have is the lid (unfinished), as I think that this was a reproduction. If I recall correctly, the original box had a bottom that was painted with bricks and a small removable drawer. If you look closely at the box lid, you'll notice that the second horse is unfinished. In addition, the outside edges of the box have not been painted and the entire piece is unvarnished.
I think it's time to take a poll! Should I ask someone to finish the piece, or should I leave it as is? I'd love some comments if anyone has an opinion!

Becky, I love the lid but I'd leave it unfinished, it's a piece of family history and it'll make for a great story someday. Think of how many amazing artifacts we've found over time that are unfinished...paintings, sculptures, novels...add this to the list, IT'S AWESOME!
ReplyDeleteI think you should collaborate with someone to finish the piece! I just love the humpty dumpty piece.
ReplyDeletebecky, i loved reading this. it truly warmed my heart, as my father was a carpenter and my mother saved a few of his items for me, and matt and i are hoping to put a few things up in the baby's room as well. in my humble opinion, i would leave the piece unfinished, so that baby ishibashi knows exactly what her grandma produced. thanks so much for sharing! -lj
ReplyDeletethis posting truly warmed my heart. i feel you should leave the piece unfinished so that baby ishibashi knows exactly what her grandma created. it is amazing how many parallels we have! my mother saved a few pieces my dad had made when he did woodwork and we are hoping to put a few pieces in the baby room as well. there are some items he made that he didn't get finished, but i love them as is.
ReplyDeletethank you so much for sharing! -lj
What special pieces! Since you asked for opinions....I think that you should leave the piece unfinished (for now) and then you, Allen, and Baby I can finish the piece together later on with your original artwork and design ideas...a coming together of the past and present generations! :) Then, Baby I can someday have the piece and continue the tradition...
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, I love the first piece. It is so darn cute, and funny, which is perfect! Also, I would say leave the piece unfinished, unless you really trust someone to finish it. And on that note, you're going to be hard pressed to find someone who will want to finish something that your mom started. You know?
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I've LOVED these last two posts.
ReplyDeleteHey Becky - I loved the posting. Your mom would be so proud and happy you're using the pieces. My vote- don't finish the piece. Varnish it to protect it. AJ
ReplyDeletei like the varnishing to protect it idea, but do what you like!
